For those of you travelling to New Zealand for this set of meetings, welcome!

It is most likely you will be flying into Auckland and taking a connecting domestic flight to our start point, the small but perfectly formed capital Wellington. A damp and wild wind whipping off the Cook Strait is almost guaranteed, but we’ll have a warm welcome ready to compensate.

On Wednesday we move to Christchurch where morning frosts can be expected. In the afternoon we’ll take you to see the slow but steady recovery of the CBD after devastating earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, plus the “red zone” where whole neighbourhoods have been removed from the map. Then on to the outlying town of Rangiora where NIWA are currently experimenting with low-cost sensors and community participation in a woodsmoke-dominated airshed.

Then finally to New Zealand’s capital of adventure, Queenstown, where we will arrive in the heart of the ski season. We have a day trip being planned to visit some of our most woodsmoke-impacted communities.

You can get the latest weather from NIWA here: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown.

See you soon!
